Event Cancelled: Gallery Workshop | Let’s Explore: Dying Matters

05/05/2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Please note: this event has been cancelled due to illness. The workshop will be rescheduled for a new date soon. We very much hope that you’ll be able to join then.

Artists have always explored death and dying through their art, producing both literal and metaphorical depictions of this universal human theme.

Through guided looking, group discussion and creative response this workshop will use selected works from the Barber’s art collection to encourage reflection, questioning and conversation around death and dying.  We’ll be using paper and coloured pencils, along with line, shape and words, to create our own ‘ghost drawings’ which we’ll then bring together to create a unique collaborative piece.  This creative activity is designed to be accessible to all, no art experience or skills are required and everyone is welcome.

The workshop will be led by Jane Nicol, the Barber’s current Nurse in Residence and an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham’s School of Nursing, and Jen Ridding, Head of Public Engagement at the Barber Institute. This workshop forms part of a wider teaching and engagement programme exploring Death and Dying : Memento Mori.

This discussion-based creative workshop will take place in person in the Barber’s inspiring galleries, providing an opportunity to come together and talk about these topics in a supportive and non-judgemental way. Further details about the workshop content and structure will be shared after booking.

This free workshop is open to anyone over the age of 18. It will be held at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and has limited spaces, so booking is essential. No experience necessary, and all materials will be provided.
